Tell me about the role that music plays in your life and why it’s important to you.
Music is healing. It speaks to parts of ourselves and emotions we can’t always name. It helps us process our emotions and our experiences, helps us make sense of the world around us, and helps us feel more connected to one another.
How did you discover Freeform Portland and why did you decide to volunteer with us?
I used to be a graphic design volunteer at KBOO back in 2018. The Development Director at the time told me about Freeform Portland and I have been listening ever since.
Tell me about your show.
Forever Here features music spanning various genres and eras by LGBTQ+ artists, and celebrates the integral role that music, from across genres and eras, has played in cultivating community, fostering a sense of belonging, and inspiring social change.

Three songs you’re digging right now.
Can you share a favorite musical memory?
Dancing with my best friends to Lady Gaga in 2008 at Roscoes in Chicago.
What is a genre/artist/record that some might be surprised to find in your collection?
Probably classical music. I love listening to classical music, especially during the workday, and even have a favorite classical radio station. Shout out to WFMT in Chicago!
Given everything happening in the world today, what’s one song you turn to for comfort or inspiration?
I find myself turning back to the music that made me fall in love with music. Tracy Chapman, Ani Difranco, Sleater Kinney. Artists who are unapologetically themselves and speak powerfully to love and to human rights.
Tell me about some musical artists that inspire you.
I would say the Indigo Girls. In all of the ways they are known for their activism both onstage and offstage, and all of the ways they see music and human existence as intertwined.
If you could create your own personal concert, including artists who have passed, who would be some of the headliners and why? OR if you could meet any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
I would create my own personal Lilith Fair, but invite all my friends of course! The festival would feature some headlining icons such as Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman and Alanis Morissette.
Why is freeform, community radio important to you? To your community?
Queer artists are vastly underrepresented on commercial radio, and creating a space at Freeform Portland that centers queer music, voices, and stories feels especially important at a time when LGBTQ+ rights are increasingly under attack.
